“It’s not just the two of you that break up, it’s everyone else (you both knew).” – Unknown

First of all, relax. It’s not the end of the world, but the end of class. That’s right! Life places many people in our lives to teach us things, and if the time has come that you’ve either grown apart or desire to move in different directions with different interests, it’s unfortunate, but you will both survive particularly if you handle matters with respect and sensitivity.

Friendship takes a lot of energy and time to build familiarity and trust required to nurture acceptance, safety even intimacy. So, try to remain friends (forever) if possible. Give each other adequate time apart to grow and experience new spaces. Then, if you get the signal that he/she is doing well, you might venture back into each other’s lives as friends who enjoy each other’s company.

I mention in my book that friends, good friends, are hard to come by. We work hard to protect and support the people who enter our lives then when you’ve invested months/years into certain relationships, sometimes misunderstandings, jealousy and poor judgement will try to disable a friendship. It doesn’t mean that it’s over what it means is we are human; we make mistakes.

If you are authentic and willing to open yourself up to others, you will find that there are many people who are looking for a good friend. A friend may be your lifeline one day, and you may be one of his/hers and then tell your friends how much they mean to you. You may think they already know this, but everyone needs to hear it once in awhile.
